In accordance with Pagan Unity Campaign's ongoing So Vote It Be
campaign and our goal to keep the rights and freedoms of minority
religions on the minds of the government representatives in Washington
during this time of great change, the Pagan Unity Campaign will stage
the 8th annual Imbolc campaign on February 4, 2009.

As has been done in previous years, we ask that all Pagans join voices
and email, fax or telephone their elected officials during the first
week of February to encourage support of religious tolerance,
diversity and freedom. It only takes a few minutes to get involved,
and serves as a simple yet powerful reminder of the importance of
religious diversity in the country, as well as the presence of Pagan
voters and other religious minorities throughout every district in the
United States.

During this time, we would also ask that you send letters of support
for religious diversity and tolerance to state and local media outlets
in the hopes that our collective voice extends beyond our elected
officials to the hearts and minds of our fellow citizens.

This is it, the countdown to one of the most historic presidential races in the history of the United States. Will it be Obama, the first black man; or McCain, with the first female Vice- President? It would be even better if a third party person won it, that would make even more historic for this day and age.

Either way it's your choice. You may not think that your vote counts, but it does. And you definitely can't complain if you don't vote at all. Your voice counts especially in the battleground states. Those states in the Central Eastern Region of PUC are Virginia, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. This is your chance to make your voice heard!

Pagans, like all Americans, are watching coverage of the Democratic
and Republican conventions this week. Barack Obama has announced that
Delaware Senator Joe Biden will be his choice for Vice President. John
McCain has chosen Alaska governor, Sarah Palin as his choice for Vice
President.

Both candidates have platforms that they believe, if implemented, will
make America a stronger nation. And, like all Americans, Pagans are
divided on both the issues and the candidates they support. One thing
however, that we as Americans and as Pagans must not be divided on, is
the importance of voting this November.

The Pagan Unity Campaign would like to encourage Pagans across the
nation to educate themselves on both the candidates and the issues and
then put that information to work and VOTE on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

I Am... Are you?

Do you have your postcards and pens at the ready? I Am is just around the corner and it's time to start filling out those postcards. Why not make it a social event? Make it a craft project with the kids? Personalize your cards?

There are so many ways to approach I Am that makes the campaign both fun and important. Here are a few ideas you might want to try this I Am to make your postcard sending painless and enjoyable.

*Print off the postcards designed by PUC staffers or create your own to add that Pagan touch. There are a few printable postcards that PUC staffers have designed located in the files section or by contacting your state chair or regional director.

*Why not make your own postcards from scratch? Using posterboard or blank index cards as a base, you can design them any way you like! This is an especially good idea for the youngsters.. who doesn't love a fun craft project? Get out the crayons, makers, glitter and stamps and make a craft of it!

*Sometimes you can find postcards on Ebay.. or you can have your own printed at Vistaprint.com (if you google free postcards, you should get a link where you can order 100 postcards for free, you just pay shipping.. to get them to you in time, you'd have to pick the quicker shipping however).

*Please use postcard stamps instead of regular first class stamps. They are cheaper and are all that is needed to send a post card along! You can get them at your local post office or you can order them at the Post Office website.

*Encourage your friends and family to get involved, even if they aren't Pagan, by sending in postcards that say something like "I am the sister of a Pagan American" "I am the Christian husband of a Pagan American."

*You can also set up a community get together to fill out postcards... just pick a date, a time, and a place, tell everyone to bring their postcards and markers and have some fun with the campaign!

*Remember, the I Am campaign is a simple, non intrusive way to remind officials that they represent Pagan Americans as well. We aren't out to change the world with this one; simply to remind elected officials that we're everywhere and we do vote. Sure, the postcards may get thrown away, but when the mailroom has received 20 or 30 with the same message during the same week... they get the message. In past years, the campaign has created quite a buzz in some mailrooms and quite a few of those that include their return address have received replies back.

Joan of Arc Press Release

Exactly 577 years ago on May 30th, 1431 Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake as a heretic and Witch. As Pagans, we should hold this martyr in our minds and spirits as a constant reminder of what can happen when individuals in power decide to use OUR faith to justify their questionable actions. While St. Joan did not self-identify as a Witch or a Pagan, preferring instead to believe that her "supernatural" visions and powers of premonitions were divine gifts from Christ, it is important that we as modern practitioners recognize what atrocities can be committed by those who don't understand nor appreciate our chosen path. Today however, that is not the world we live in.

As Americans the first amendment to our governmental constitution gives us the right to freedom of religion (for full reference please refer to the following web address: http://caselaw. lp.findlaw. com/data/ constitution/ amendment01/ ).

This can be translated to mean that the unjust processes committed on behalf of the Medieval Church will no longer occur.

For those of us at your friendly neighborhood Pagan Unity Campaign this anniversary is a great opportunity to join in our annual "IAm" campaign. This event is driven by a desire to inform our legislative representatives at all levels of government that we, as Pagans, are members of their community and their constituency and as such our interests should be taken into consideration! !

Seven years ago the Pagan Unity Campaign began what has, for many, become an annual tradition. We gathered our post cards and set to work reminding elected officials that the United States is home to some of the most diverse groups of people around; and Pagan Americans are one of those groups. With one simple line, 'I Am a Pagan _____,' we reminded elected officials in all 50 states that this is truly a nation of religious diversity and that we expect them to work to preserve that diversity and the importance religious beliefs of every stripe hold to the American people.

As Pagans, our religious beliefs hold a special place in our lives, but our religious beliefs are not the only thing by which we may be defined. We are teachers, we are parents, we are students, we are lawyers... and we are everything between. And just as importantly, we vote.

It is once again time to take up the charge and remind elected officials that we are American, we are here and that we not only pay attention, but that we are proactive in addressing issues of religious tolerance.

The Pagan Unity Campaign would like to encourage the Pagan community to get involved during this important election year and send in post-cards to current elected officials at the local, state and federal level in addition to those who are running for office. Alas, All Barrels Have Their Bad Apples

It is sad but true; all barrels have their bad apples hidden within.

The Pagan community is not immune to ignorant and/or immoral idiots who call themselves one of us, and then go on to be the worse kind of bad example, spewing bad PR and worse damage in the wake of their stupid if not outright evil behavior.

The problem is, most people do not judge all Muslims by the “bad example” of Osama Bin Laden, or all Christians by the bad example of David Koresh, nor all New Agers by the bad example of the Heaven’s Gate cult. Nonetheless, it seems painfully clear that too often too many people still judge all Pagans and Witches and Wiccans and Druids and other Earth Religionists by the crimes of our few bad apples. Admittedly we’ve had some real rotten-to-the-core ones…and will sadly continue to in the future, most likely. We are open and accepting and loving people and we tend to embrace everyone, even those we shouldn’t. In our inclusive accepting ways we sadly include and accept those who we should not to start with. However, once those bad apples have been pointed out to us, we should stop including and accepting them! That seems simple, but often it is not so clear to Pagan leaders, clergy and communities when faced with a situation where one within their circle surprisingly turns out to be a bad apple.

How can we as a community distance ourselves from these types of bad examples? It is a question we ask each other often. A question we are forced to address way too often when such situations arise where someone within our local Pagan Circles turns out to be an idiot, mentally ill, or actually evil. Woefully, we tend to have some people who call themselves “Pagan” who fit all three categories. Perplexingly, some of our fellow Pagans will balk at denouncing these people…they will urge us to be “understanding” or “forgiving” or “tolerant.” The fact is some things, some people, some behaviors and some crimes are just wrong and not understandable, forgivable, or tolerable. That is a hard lesson: For some of us who have fought long and hard for tolerance and acceptance to realize that everything is not tolerable and acceptable! Some things are just wrong. There is still a line between right and wrong. Just because you are trying to be progressive and open-minded and tolerant doesn’t mean you can just not draw that line between right and wrong…you must draw it somewhere. Even if you draw that line at a different place than the (in your view) narrow-minded greater community, you still must draw the line somewhere!

We in the Pagan community try so hard to be open-minded, we often get so open-minded our brains start to fall out. It is a hard lesson for us to face that we can’t and shouldn’t blindly accept everything and anything, just because we preach acceptance and tolerance of our faith.

An ancient and honorable faith like Witchcraft, Paganism, Druidism, Shamanism, or modern variations thereof, like Wiccans and such, should naturally be accepted; a religion is not intolerable. However, some things, some behaviors, some people are intolerable, and we should stop preaching acceptance when we are faced with such stupidity and/or evilness. Those things do not deserve acceptance. People who practice such behaviors should not be “accepted” or “understood.” They should not be excused with the wand of “tolerance.” They should be exposed, exiled, and executed in some extreme cases with the Athame of Lady Justice and Lady Karma instead. We real Pagans should not feel obligated to explain or excuse or expunge such behaviors and crimes. We should stand up and loudly and proudly be intolerant in such cases!

The Pagan community’s bad apples range from just the misguided and stupid bruised-apple types to those who are evil mutations of nature and are rotten-to-the-core types… and none of them should be protected or covered up for by the legitimate Pagan community, just because they call themselves one of “us.” That does not make them one of us; it does not make them representative of our religion or our community. However if we stand behind these bad apple bad examples, and “accept” them and embrace them and forgive them, then we should not be surprised when our whole community gets judged by their bad example. What is the greater community to think if we ourselves allow and foster such fools and monsters amongst us? Naturally they will think us all as ignorant and immoral as our fosterlings.

The phrase goes, “One bad apple spoils the barrel;” that is why a good farmer doesn’t let any bad apples stay in any barrel. We as Pagan clergy and leaders need to listen to the wisdom of that farmer. We need to kick such bad apples out of our barrels as soon as we know they are bad. That doesn’t make us “intolerant” or not “accepting;” that makes us a religious group with a code of honor and morals that we hold ourselves to. It is shocking that many of our Pagan clergy and Pagan group leaders hesitate to show this bit of wise leadership. In their defense, often they are trying to be all-accepting and all-inclusive, for they fear being seen as un-PC. Or perhaps they have just become so open-minded their brains are falling out.

Pagans need to encourage their leaders to set limits on what is acceptable and tolerable and what is not. We need to start drawing that line between right and wrong somewhere, instead of just arguing that everyone else has it drawn too conservatively so we are going to erase it altogether. The line is there for a good reason, so when people go over it, we know to stop associating with them and to punish them or see that the greater community punishes them before they cause any more harm to others around them.

We preach, “And ye harm none.” But perhaps we should add, “And ye let no one else do harm either.”

New Marshall policy lets pagan students miss class on holidays

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- When George Fain visits a grave on Thursday to mark a pagan holiday, she won't have to worry about the work she's missing in her classes at Marshall University in Huntington.

That's because her absence on the Samhain holiday has been approved by the school, which for the first time is recognizing pagan students' desire to be excused from class for religious holidays and festivals.

The university with an enrollment of about 14,000 may be the only school in the country to formally protect pagan students from being penalized by missing work that falls on religious holidays, although other schools have catchall policies they say protect students from every religious faith.

But as members of the eclectic group of faiths gathered under the term "pagan'' become more willing to publicly assert their beliefs, Fain suggests other schools may follow Marshall's example.

"I think we may have opened a door,'' Fain said. "Now that we know we can be protected, that the government will stand behind us and we feel safe, it's going to be more prevalent.''

The state's largest university, West Virginia University, does not have a policy specifically addressing pagan holidays.

The decision to allow pagan students to make up missed work from classes on holidays was simply an extension of existing university policy toward members of other religious groups, according to Marshall's Dean of Student Affairs Steve Hensley.

"I don't think there are a lot of students here who have those beliefs, but we want to respect them,'' Hensley said. "It was really just a matter of looking into it, and deciding what was the right thing.''

Although the university had considered adopting a calendar of specific pagan holidays on which excuses for absence would be granted, Hensley said he ultimately decided to adopt a case-by-case policy.

Students are responsible for establishing that they are religious believers and that the holiday in question is important to their respective tradition by filing a written request with Hensley. The university is aware of the potential for some students to falsely claim to be pagan in a bid to skip a midterm they haven't studied for.

"What we're trying to do is get at what students' core beliefs are,'' he said.

It's not easy to say whether Marshall is the only university with such a policy. Experts on paganism contacted for this story say they aren't aware of others. A call to the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Some schools have catchall policies that allow students to be excused for any religious holiday. Such a policy has been formally in place at LeHigh University in Pennsylvania for about eight years, according to Lloyd Steffen, a professor of religion and the university's chaplain.

Such an accommodation for pagans is also rare in Britain, the birthplace of modern paganism.

"Nobody yet gets any holiday for pagan festivals in the United Kingdom. It seems to be an American original,'' said Ronald Hutton, a history professor at the University of Bristol in England.

By specifically including pagans, Marshall is taking an important step toward recognizing the validity of their beliefs, said Jason Pitzl-Waters, an authority on paganism who edits the Wild Hunt Web site from Milwaukee.

"That's part of the struggle for modern pagans,'' said Pitzl-Waters, a pagan. "Even though modern paganism has been in public since the 1950s, a lot of people still see it as a rebellious teenage activity, not necessarily something you do as a religious observance.''

That's starting to change, according to Helen Berger, a sociology professor at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.

In particular, she cited the recent decision by the Department of Defense to agree to pagan requests that the five-pointed star -- sometimes called the pentacle -- be allowed on the gravestones of veterans in national cemeteries.

"That was a major win, and it's encouraged them to start looking for areas where they can gain the rights and recognition that other religions have,'' Berger said.

The term "pagan'' encompasses a diverse array of faiths who can include those seeking to reconstruct the forms of pre-Christian religious worship in Northern Europe to the better-known Wiccans, who draw largely on more recent sources.

"What binds us together isn't our theology, necessarily,'' Pitzl-Waters said. "What binds us together is a sense of communal practice and togetherness.''

Putting a number on pagan believers in the United States can be difficult. Estimates range from 400,000 to 1 million. Part of the problem is that many believers may feel uncomfortable acknowledging a faith that is still regarded with suspicion.

Marty Laubach, a sociology professor at Marshall and adviser to a group of pagan students, said he's seen flyers advertising pagan meetings ripped down by others.

But actions like the university's decision on absences encourage pagans to be more vocal, he said.

"You'll have more people now who are willing to say, 'These are my beliefs,''' he said. "The American neopagan movement is a lot stronger than you think.''

What can we as Pagans do to in order to achieve equanimity in the treatment of our faith in America today?

But first you must register to vote!

With the 2008 primary elections quickly approaching, the Pagan Unity Campaign, as part of our ongoing 'SO VOTE IT BE' voter registration and education campaign, would like to encourage the entire Pagan community to get out and register to vote in the upcoming primary elections. This is an excellent opportunity for the Pagan community to get in gear for the all-important upcoming presidential election in November of 2008.

Take part in shaping our world and how you will be treated in it. At this point in time, we are governed by an administration that is controlled by a number of fundamentalist Christians. They would love to see the Separation of church and state become an idea of the past, have first amendment rights removed from the Constitution, and tell us who and how we can worship. If we do not act now we may not be free to act later.

One very important step in maintaining our freedoms is registering and voting in the upcoming elections for the candidates and the issues that we support. Know your candidates and their views on the issues that are important to you. If you are not certain on their views (such as where they stand on religious freedom), look them up online or write the candidates themselves and ask for specifics. Let them know that you will only support and vote for those candidates willing to be a voice for the Constitutional right to religious freedom for all faiths.

CARSON CITY -- When President Bush took time Tuesday to meet family members of some of the fallen soldiers from Northern Nevada , a woman whose husband made the ultimate sacrifice was notably absent.

Roberta Stewart of Fernley, who lost her husband, Sgt. Patrick Stewart, when the helicopter he was in was shot down in Afghanistan in September 2005, said she was not invited to the meeting that followed Bush's speech to the American Legion's national convention in Reno.

Other members of the Stewart family were invited to the brief, private meeting, including her husband's parents and brother, as were family members of others who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan .

Stewart said her in-laws were contacted by the White House last week in advance of the visit by Bush to Reno . But she received no call or e-mail extending an invitation.

Stewart's parents, Steve and Sandy Stewart of Reno , and his brother, Jason Stewart of Silver Springs, offered no comment on the meeting.

Roberta Stewart said she believes she knows why no invitation was extended to her by the White House.

Roberta Stewart, like her late husband, is a practitioner of the Wiccan faith, and she fought with the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than a year to win the right to display the pentacle, the emblem of their faith, on his memorial marker in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

Patrick Stewart had the pentacle on his dog tags.

Roberta Stewart and several other Wiccans, backed by a major Wiccan religious group and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, reached a settlement with the federal agency in April allowing the symbol to be used in veterans cemeteries.

"I'm upset that I wasn't invited," she said of the Bush meeting. "I think it is because of my faith. I feel like I've been discriminated against again."

Stewart said she would have gone if invited.

"I would have loved to have spoken to President Bush and ask him why he dishonored my husband," she said. "That's probably why I wasn't invited."

White House spokesman Trey Bohn said only that Bush met privately with family members of military personnel who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and that, "we do not discuss private meetings."

Stewart said that while researching a lawsuit to allow the use of the pentacle, Wiccan attorneys came across information indicating Bush was opposed to recognition of the faith. The New York Times reported when the settlement was reached in April that Bush, in an interview with Good Morning America in 1999, said: "I don't think witchcraft is a religion."

The government finally agreed to the settlement "in the interest of the families concerned and to spare taxpayers the expense of further litigation," VA spokesman Matt Burns said in an e-mail announcing the agreement in April.

Additionally, Burns said, the agency settled after it became clear that the Wiccan pentacle would be deemed acceptable under new rules the VA has proposed for recognizing "emblems of belief."

The Wiccan faith is based on nature and emphasizes respect for the earth and its processes. One of its primary tenants is "do no harm."

The space allotted for Patrick Stewart's plaque at the Fernley cemetery remained blank until November, when the state of Nevada sidestepped the federal government and allowed the use of the symbol at the cemetery.

The Nevada Army National Guardsman and four other soldiers died after their Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan . Among the dead was Stewart's friend, John Flynn, a chief warrant officer with the guard.

Flynn's widow, Christie Flynn, was invited to the Bush meeting, Roberta Stewart said. "Other local widows were there. I was excluded."

If Bush thought he was honoring Patrick Stewart by meeting with selected family members, he was wrong, Roberta Stewart said.

"I am very, very disappointed," she said.

3. A Pagan parent's religion shall not be used as evidence for the purpose of deciding child custody issues.

4. Pagans shall be free to work without regard their religion, and should be free from proselytizing and harassment at the workplace.

5. Pagans shall have the same freedom to conduct their lives that is given to followers of other religions, within the boundaries of the law, without interference by, or discrimination from representatives of their local, state, or federal government.

6. School district personnel and classroom visitors shall not proselytize or harass Pagan children while on public school property or at public school functions.

7. Pagans shall have the same freedom to exercise all of their rights as do all other American citizens.

8. Pagans are entitled to the free exercise of their beliefs and rituals and must must be protected from the interference of others during the practice thereof.

9. Pagans shall have the right to redress when their religious rights are abused.

10. Pagans shall be able to wear sacred symbols of their faith in environments where followers of other faiths are free to express themselves similarly.

The above clipping from America's first international treaty goes unnoticed by the media, elected officials and political pundits.

The quote stands by itself in its unquestionable meaning and was signed by many of the Nation's founders. The political policies that were obviously present in 1797 pales to the backward bigotry of the majority of our present day elected officials.

This is not a Christian nation. Neither we, nor President Adams, could say it any more clearly. America is a secular nation, where all are free to worship as they wish.

The mission of the Pagan Unity Campaign (PUC) is to unify the many diverse branches of Paganism in America. A lofty goal that has been tried many times before and not succeeded. However, we are not attempting to unify Pagans under a religious umbrella, but we want Pagans to come together under the banner of Freedom.

To underscore our goal and our issues, we drafted and signed the Pagan Bill Of Rights; a document based on secular rights that all Pagans should have access to, but all too often are denied.

It is our hope that we can all agree that unifying on this one, single position; the Pagan Bill Of Rights, would be a powerful first step. If we are successful here, the next issue will be easier.

Nothing would be more unifying than if we could all feel safe enough to emerge from the social darkness of the broom closet, free of the oppressive chains of fear and hate.

I wake up in the morning and thank the Goddess that I AM FREE, and Brothers and Sisters, WE ARE UNITED.
